New report on transgender health and health care reveals enormous disparities

October 13, 2010

Today marks the release of a new report, the National Transgender Discrimination Survey Report on Health and Health Care. The report was compiled by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, both Coalition members. The findings confirm that transgender and gender non-conforming people face rampant discrimination in health care settings, are regularly denied needed care, and experience a range of health risks because they are transgender or gender non-conforming. The results are shocking; 19 percent of survey respondents reported being refused care outright, because they were transgender or gender non-conforming; 50 percent reported having to teach their medical providers about transgender care; and a staggering 41 percent of respondents reported attempting suicide, compared to 1.6 percent of the general population. The Coalition applauds the release of this data by two of its members, and hopes to see more efforts in LGBT health data collection in the future.
